Built-in Microwaves Buyers’ Guide

What is a built-in microwave?

A built-in microwave is a microwave that is nicely tucked into a wall space, cabinet, or a kitchen drawer, compared to a standard microwave that rests on the countertop. This microwave saves you a bunch of space on the countertop but is slightly more expensive than regular microwaves. It also requires a fair amount of assembly and installation before you can start using, so be prepared to get your toolbox out. Once installed, it cannot be moved, so if you are in a temporary space, this is not the optimal choice for you. A built-in microwave can become a staple piece in your kitchen if it matches your interior decorations, but it can also be easily hidden away if you do not desire to display it.

How to install a built-in microwave?

Start by positioning the back template of the microwave and using a pencil to mark any available holes for mounting it onto a wall. Open the top mounting-template, and place it against the bottom part of the cabinet. Mark two areas where you will drill holes on the cabinet bottom. Use a stud finder to find the wall studs and mark their positions. Find the backplate holes backplate, which are made according to the stud’s width. Use a lever to check that these marked spots are in proper alignment. Use heavy-duty mounting screws to attach the backplate to the wall studs. Drill through the two marked spots with a 3/4-inch drill bit. Next, switch the drill bit to a keyhole bit and drill into the cabinet bottom where the power cord will go. Place the microwave onto the brackets, slide the cord into a cabinet and position the two microwave holes to the holes in the base. Insert the bolts and tighten them securely. Plug your microwave in, and it is ready to use.
