Are Whiskey Stones Worth Buying?

hello everybody and welcome to the
whisky dictionary where I do the
research try to teach you a little
something about what you’re drinking
today I’m gonna be talking to you about
whisky stones and chances are that if
you found this video you’re considering
either buying them for yourself or for
somebody else so one way or another let
me give you a little information about
them so you can make an informed
decision
so whiskey stones are based on the idea
of volcanic pumice sitting in a ice-cold
stream and then adding that to your
whisky to chill it off so volcanic
pumice works especially well for this
because it’s porous and that in turn
turns the whisky cold faster now you’re
gonna see several different materials
for whisky stones available most of the
time it’s soapstone and soapstone holds
the cold very very well you’ll also see
stainless steel you may actually find
some volcanic pumice and there’s
probably a few others that I don’t know
about that being said I’m gonna do a
little experiment for you here to kind
of show this so I’ve got two glasses of
bourbon here and I pick bourbon
specifically because it’s typically what
people would choose to chill and I’m
gonna take the temperature of my control
over here and it’s roughly about sixty
eight point nine degrees
so that’s room temperature now I’m gonna
take a few of these and you would
typically maybe use three or four and
plunk them down in here and then give it
a minute
to chill and you won’t be able to read
this thermometer so I’m just gonna have
to read it to you but either way let me
well this is kind of taking its
temperature let me tell you why you
would do this so whisky stones could be
argued that in general there for
beginners that being said I disagree and
only reason I disagree is because
whiskey drinkers are not always drinking
whiskey to experience it we’re not
always nosing it we’re not always
tasting it and making you know pedantic
little little comments about how it
tastes I mean I am but not most people
so one thing that you should know is
that when you chill whisky it dulls the
flavor and that is really good because
sometimes whisky is very high proof or
has a really strong bite to it from too
much rye or something like that and you
want to dull that flavor that’s exactly
what chilling your whiskey is for so
this has gone down about ten degrees so
that’s pretty considerable considering
that was only
therefore probably less than a minute so
as I said the entire point is to chill
the whiskey and to make it a little
easier to drink so if you’re looking to
get somebody who’s not necessarily into
whisky into this and this might be a
good solution now why not use an ice
cube well the answer to that is twofold
number one is that ice may actually make
it a little too cold
or at some point you’ll feel like you’re
drinking more of a cocktail or something
like that but more importantly ice is
water and so you’re going to affect the
flavor of your whisky whereas stones
they don’t melt so that is kind of the
idea
you’re gonna dull the flavor but you’re
not gonna change it versus water which
can have usually a positive change but
you may still want to experience the
whisky as it was meant to be so do I
recommend buying whisky stones
absolutely they last forever there
you’re not gonna regret having them in
your freezer and they take a very very
little room so I would suggest that you
buy some and you know maybe I’ll have a
link or two down in the description here
but in general you can find these
anywhere so you can usually buy them at
a store – that being said thank you for
joining me here on the whisky Dictionary
and I hope you have a great rest of your
day
Cheers

Whiskey Stones Buyers’ Guide

How to keep drinks cold without ice?

Many people want to enjoy a chilly beverage without having it be diluted by the melted water from ice. This is especially true for those who enjoy cold alcohol, and the strong taste of it. The perfect solution to keep a drink cold without using ice is to use stainless steel ice cubes called “whiskey stones”. Whiskey stones are made from stainless steel, which is usually used in medical or dental tools. The base of chilling a drink lies in transferring the heat from the liquid to the cooling object such as ice or whiskey stones. Ice cubes absorb the heat from the drink as they heat up, which causes them to melt and cool the drink. Whiskey stones absorb the heat but do not melt, so they make the drink colder without diluting it.

What are whiskey stones?

Whiskey stones are an invention designed to chill beverages without melting into them, so no dilution of the drink occurs. They are small cubes of natural stone such as soapstone used to chill alcohols like whiskey along with other beverages. These stones are available in many sizes. Whiskey stones are designed to be chilled in the freezer before being added to all types of alcoholic drinks. There are whiskey stones made from stainless steel, which have a gel inside them that freezes so they stay cold for much longer. Whiskey stones are also designed to not add any flavor to the drink, so the drinker will enjoy their beverage at their desired temperature for some time. They also make the perfect gift for any alcohol lover and look great as a presentation piece on a table.

How to use whiskey stones?

Using whiskey stones is very straightforward and simple. Before you start to use them, you must place them in the freezer at least 4 hours before, so make sure to plan ahead. Once at least 4 hours have gone by and you are ready to enjoy your glass of rum or any other beverage, then place the stones into the glass and pour your drink on top. Let the stones sit for a few minutes as they start to reduce the temperature of your drink. The soapstone is relatively soft, so you can leave it in your cup without having to worry about it scratching your glass and it will hold the temperature for hours. You only need to use two or three stones to keep your drink cold for a few hours.

How to clean whiskey stones?

You must make sure to clean whiskey stones after each use, to keep bacteria from growing on the stones and flavors from being absorbed. Whiskey stones should be washed with dish soap and warm water. Roll them back and forth in your hands underneath the warm water. Add a few drops of dish soap while lathering them up and then rinse. Dry the stones with a towel and leave them in a sunny and dry location to thoroughly dry them, then return them to the freezer. To remove absorbed flavors, fill a glass half full with water and add a quarter of vodka, then place the stones inside. Stir the glass a few times and leave for several hours. Then, dry the stones and place them back into the freezer.
