Which Kitchen Shears are a Cut Above the Rest?
Kitchen Shears Buyers’ Guide
Kitchen shears are specifically designed scissors for cooking purposes. There are different types of them, some of which are designed for cutting bread, trimming fins off fish, cutting bacon, cutting stips off lettuce, etc. Of any well-equipped kitchen, these shears are an inseparable part of it. You may think a knife is enough for performing each step the kitchen shears do; however, the difference is that with scissors, you have more flexibility and control over cutting the way you like.
There are many things for which you can use kitchen shears. Instead of the pizza wheel, you can use shears to cut your pizza into even smaller slices effortlessly. You can also use kitchen shears for snipping herbs. The most common usage of these scissors is to cut up a whole chicken. Unlike a sharp knife, with kitchen scissors, you have more control while you cut up and slice right through bones and joints. You can even make tortillas and quesadillas. You can brush the tortilla chips with oil after which cut them into wedges with shears and place on a baking sheet. You can also cut baked quesadilla with shears.
First of all, obtain a piece of sandpaper, which has about 150 to 200 grit. If you want the scissors to have smoother edges, then use the sandpaper with a lower grit. Fold it in half and make sure its rough side is facing outside. Cut through the sandpaper using fluid cutting motion. You will notice that after ten cuts, your shears’ blades are sharper. If not, cut through it until you feel it is sharp enough to cut ingredients or switch to the sandpaper with a higher grit. After you have performed these steps, make sure to wipe your shears clean, and start using it!
