Herb Grinders Buyers’ Guide

How do herb grinders work?

The design of a herb grinder is very straightforward yet also fairly intuitive. With a standard design, you simply put the large pieces of spice into the grinding chamber and twist the lid in a circle-like motion, which will reduce spices into smaller pieces inside the chamber. After you are done grinding, you can just open the lid and take out your herbs. There are also herb grinders with a few chambers, which will catch the grounded herb, and the other chamber will catch the smaller byproduct of the ground herb to give it an extra kick. In order for the pieces to be able to pass through the small holes into the bottom chamber, you must keep your herb grinder clean.

How to use a herb grinder?

Take off the grinder lid and break the herbs into smaller pieces. Next, fill these smaller pieces into a space that is located directly under the lid. Flatten it down slightly with your fingers and put the lid back on. Rotate the lid to the left and right to thoroughly grind the herbs, and they will continue to fall through the holes into the bottom storage compartment. Press down in the middle of the grinder and rotate it to open the bottom section. Then, you can remove the freshly ground herbs and enjoy. After you have made all the herbs, a small trick is to lightly tap it against a hard surface a few times so all the smaller particles in the holes will fall into the bottom compartment of the grinder.

How to clean a herb grinder?

Start the cleaning process by disassembling it and placing all parts in a freezer for about thirty minutes. This will make sure that any residue stuck inside will harden and be easier to loosen. Then, take the herb grinder out of the freezer, remove any particles and tap the sections against a hard surface to knock out anything left. A paintbrush or toothbrush can also be used to sweep off any other particles left. Be sure that you have swept all the nooks and small holes of the grinder. For a deeper cleanse, you can use some rubbing alcohol on the paintbrush. Fill a ziplock bag with enough isopropyl alcohol to cover the herb grinder and leave it inside to soak for a few hours. Once you see the alcohol become muddy or cloudy, then this will mean most particles have loosened into the liquid. Rinse, let it dry, reassemble, and use.
