How to Make Tomato Sauce With a Food Mill?

Food Mill Buyers’ Guide

What is a food mill?

Food mills are part strainer part masher and help to crash food by forcing them through a disk in it. It consists of three separate parts, which are the bowl, a bottom that looks like a colander, and a crank shaped device with a bent metal handle that crushes the food and forces it through the disks into the bowl. Food mills are usually made from stainless steel or aluminum. When it comes to components of food mills separately, the container may be small or large, plastic or metallic. It functions like potato ricer and is considered to be one of the most useful kitchen tools.

How does a food mill work?

Food mills are very simple and useful at the same time. For instance, manual food mills, which are the most common of all, are great for processing small batches. They are also cost-efficient and space-saving. When it comes to electric ones, you do not need to perform the steps you do while processing with manual food mills. The only disadvantage is that they are very large and more expensive.

How to use a food mill?

Food mills are usually manual and require you to perform several steps. First of all, place the food on the disc and below the crank. As you turn the crank, the food is mashed down onto a disc at the bottom of the food mill, which is a bowl. This kitchen tool usually comes with several interchangeable discs so you can mash food the way you like.

Early in my career, I attended many workshops and seminars in Europe and the United States. The training took place at Michelin 3*-4* restaurants and cooking schools.
