5 Different Ways To Use Cocktail Shakers
Cocktail Shaking Techniques
Cocktail Shaker Buyers’ Guide
Start making a cocktail by pouring all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker and filling the rest with ice. Secure the lid tightly, and hold it with one hand. The other hand should be on the bottom piece. Shake it vigorously over the shoulder and slowly count to ten or until you notice the outside of the shaker frosting up. Strain the cocktail into a chilled glass and serve. Be careful not to overfill the shaker or the drink might spill during shaking. When making cocktails with many ingredients, or ingredients that do not mix well, shake harder and longer. For example egg cocktails should be mixed for at least 30 seconds and the ice should be added on the second shake.
The Boston shaker consists of two parts, a mixing glass, and a metal tumbler. A hawthorn strainer may also be used as an accessory with a Boston shaker. To start, put all your ingredients into the glass section of the shaker and fill up to halfway with ice. Now place the metal tumbler over the glass at a slight angle. Using the heel of your hand, hit the upturned part of the metal tumbler a few times to make sure it is a tight fit while holding the glass base steady. Turn the whole thing upside down, put one hand on the bottom of the metal tumbler and the other hand across the top of the glass and shake hard. After 30 seconds of shaking, put the shaker back down, with the metal side down and whack the rim to open the seal. Now put the hawthorn strainer over the metal tumbler and fit in inside the shaker lip. Hold the shaker in one hand with a finger securing the strainer in place and slowly pour out the cocktail and serve.
